Savannah DA weighing appeal of speedy trial ruling

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) Savannah prosecutors are weighing an appeal of a judge’s decision to throw out charges against a man accused of raping and killing his girlfriend’s 12-year-old daughter.

Chatham County Superior Court Judge Penny Haas Freesemann ruled Wednesday that prosecutors violated Bobby Lavon Buckner’s right to a speedy trial with constant delays and mounting allegations of evidence being lost. Buckner was to stand trial June 11 in connection with the 2003 slaying of young Ashleigh Moore. He was first charged with the crime in 2007.

District Attorney Larry Chisolm has 30 days to appeal to the Georgia Supreme Court. His office said in a statement Wednesday prosecutors will review the case and consult with Ashleigh’s family before deciding.

Buckner’s attorney, Newell Hamilton, says he’s stunned the judge granted his motion to dismiss the

SunTrust Mortgage settles fed complaint for $21M

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) SunTrust Mortgage Inc. has agreed to pay $21 million to settle a federal lawsuit alleging racial discrimination in its lending practices, documents filed Thursday in U.S. District Court show.

The U.S. Justice Department said in a lawsuit that SunTrust Mortgage charged more than 20,000 black and Hispanic borrowers more than non-Hispanic white borrowers, not based on risk but because of race or national origin. The department says it reviewed more than 850,000 residential mortgage loans originated by the company between 2005 and 2009.

The consent order says SunTrust denied wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement to avoid costly and potentially risky litigation.

“Today’s settlement demonstrates that the Department of Justice takes seriously its responsibility to investigate mortgage lending practices during the mortgage boom years and, when the evidence shows the law

Judge tells John Edwards jury to keep deliberating after they reach verdict in 1 of 6 counts

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) The judge in John Edwards’ campaign corruption trial is telling jurors to keep deliberating after she apparently misunderstood them and thought they had reached a verdict on all six counts.

The jury was called into the courtroom Thursday and U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Eagles said she understood the panel had reached a verdict on all counts. That’s when the jury foreman said no.

The jury said it had reached a verdict on one count of taking illegal campaign contributions. The money involves payments from wealthy donor Rachel “Bunny” Mellon.

The verdict was not announced.

Edwards is accused of masterminding a plan to use money from wealthy donors to hide his pregnant mistress as he ran for president in 2008.

Paris plane crash spurs cultural growth in Atlanta

ATLANTA (AP) Fifty years ago, a group of 106 influential cultural and civic leaders from Atlanta traveled to Europe to visit famous museums and demonstrate the ascendant southern city’s commitment to culture.

The Atlanta area’s population in 1962 had recently hit a million people, but political and business leaders worried the growth wouldn’t continue if the city didn’t improve its museums and venues for theater and music. The city’s cultural development would be altered forever by the trip, but in ways that had to do more with its tragic end.

The group was on its way home June 3 when its chartered Air France plane crashed on takeoff at Orly Field in Paris, killing all but two flight attendants. It was the worst single plane crash at the time.
